1. Episode 33 Audio: Evil has A Beginning----Maleficent
This is a podcast made by Sarah Woloski. In this podcast, Sarah Woloski invited some guests who are interested in Disney stories. She compares Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty with Monique Harr. Monique Harr said “That is not how she is still carrying the theme of jealousy. But it’s a lot more fleshed out a little understandable.” (00.46.00) In Sleeping Beauty(1959) Maleficent is indeed strong jealousy shown as a powerful woman. But the revenge shown in the new movie Maleficent is indeed betrayed, which is more reasonable than the original movie. The feminine qualities displayed are no longer the image of a jealous woman.
I will use this paragraph in the podcast to compare the social background during the Sleeping Beauty period with the current social background. To show the image of women created by different social values.
2. Disney’s Magic Mirror (Harr&Trapedo)
This is our practice reading wrote by Professor Lynda Hass and Shaina Trapedo. In the article, Kaitlin Ebersol said “All Disney’s early Princess adaptations share the same basic plot: “a beautiful woman suffers because of circumstances out of her control and ultimately finds salvation in the love of a powerful man.” She mentioned that Disney’s early princess always waiting for a powerful man to come to save them. These early films show the weakness of women and the strength of men.
I will use this paragraph to combine the first song sung by Princess Aurora of Sleeping Beauty (1959) to show the image of the princess of the early Disney films. And discuss the evaluation of early Disney as a traditional movie in society at that time.
3. History of Sleeping Beauty-Disney Princess Analysis ( Disney Umbrella)
This is a youtube video. In this video, Shannon talks about the history of the 1950s.Shannon said “It also fell upon the women to keep the family unit strong and intact as the family was again seen as an essential building block to build towards a strong and healthy society.”(00.03.09) When men participate in war, what women can do is help their families, to make their families healthy and strong is their jobs.
I am going to use this video information to give a short background when Sleeping Beauty (1950) came out. And to discuss what kind of role women play in society at that time. Later, I want to combine the movie to see whether the early Disney princess image was influenced by society.
